The decline and fall of Italian civilization

So Prime Minister Berlusconi of Italy said that he couldn't believe that half of Italy would be such coglioni as to vote for the left.

People are trying so hard to translate coglioni into English, but apparently none of these people have ever been middle school boys, because the best translation is gonads. Only a bunch of gonads would vote for the liberals.

The most direct translation for coglioni is testicles and it is super, super rude insult. Don't call anyone coglioni. Newspapers in the English speaking world have tried to explain it as dick, dickhead, prick, idiot, fool, testicles, and so on and so forth, none of those lexemes convey the wrinkly gracelessness, the hairy unintelligence, and the sweaty funkyness of coglioni. "Gonads" comes the closest. Am I right?

Anyway, the responses to the Prime Minister's lack of decorum, by taking the word coglioni as a badge of honor. That's right, signs and t-shirts saying "I'm a gonad!" "I'm a gonad too!" have shown up on the street.


We'll find out soon enough how Silvio does "at the urns" this week. In the mean time, I'd like to say.... if I had to choose between being a coglione and voting for Silvio Berlusconi....
