You Want Recruiting?

So folks, I work at a private high school, which has a very successful athletic program. Often, there are whispers that our athletic department's acheivement is recruiting, using our financial largesse to buy athletically gifted students.

It's silly, of course, because, well for one there's not even money to fix drinking fountains and replace bunching carpet.... we get scolded for leaving lights on. Parents and alumni may behave like they are big shots with a lot of pull, but the admissions committee isn't made up of any of them. Yes, there are scholarships for students who need them, but it's silly to suggest that we recruit them with scholarships... the students have to get accepted to the school first, and on their own merit. Finally, the highly-skilled 'recruitables' are often minority kids, and well, let's just say the school isn't known for being a beacon of cultural brilliance.

So yes, we're a private school, yes, there are scholarships, NO! we don't recruit athletes. They recruit themselves.

If you want to see recruiting, you'll have to look at this public school. Good lord, what is so important about a state championship? Get some perspective, folks.
